I found CrossFit when I was twelve years old when my mom invited my sister and me to join her introductory classes at the gym. There was just something different about CrossFit as a sport and methodology that made sense in my mind, and it was the first sport I wanted to excel at – to see what it would be possible to accomplish. I grew up skiing, fencing, and mountain biking, and I have also run cross country, but I never wanted to commit and work as hard as I do in CrossFit for any of those activities. As CrossFit became a bigger part of my life, I wanted to learn more about it. One of the ways to do this was by taking the CrossFit Level 1 Seminar – I waited excitedly till I was old enough to take the L1, and found one right after my birthday. It was a great experience and I was able to learn a lot about CrossFit and how to coach – since then I have continued taking more courses and coaching as many classes as possible to become the best athlete and coach that I can be.
My biggest turning point with CrossFit came the summer after I started, when I saw the CrossFit Games for the first time in a documentary – to say I was hooked would be an understatement. Seeing CrossFit at the highest level, including all of the different amazing things these athletes could do at a high intensity, day after day during the competition, made me want to see what I was capable of. I went from being at the gym every week to three times a week to six days a week – attacking every workout trying to get fitter that summer and beyond.
I coach for a multitude of reasons. Selfishly, it makes me a better athlete by increasing my understanding of the sport, and what needs to be done for improved fitness. More importantly, though, coaching gives me a lot of fulfillment and gratification from helping athletes achieve something they have been working at for a long time or something they did not think they could do. I want to coach and help anyone who wants to move as well as they can, and will find a way in every workout to leave the gym better than when they came in. I have been lucky to have some very knowledgeable and committed coaches and athletes who have shared their time to help me improve, and I want to be that for as many people as possible.
