I began my CrossFit Journey in 2014 after I had my 4th baby, my husband was about to deploy, and I had 4 kids at home with me 5 and under. I was a collegiate soccer player and morphed into a runner afterward to keep in shape. I was super interested in CrossFit but was very intimidated as I thought I wasn't capable of most of the movements. I was encouraged by a friend to join a gym that had childcare, took the leap, and haven't looked back since. We moved several times since then and consequentially I have been a member of multiple gyms over the last 10 years and have been exposed to several different styles of coaching and gym settings. I wanted to get my L1 coaching certification for several years, but moving or life circumstances interfered. Finally, in October of 2022, I was able to take the L1 course and began my coaching journey.
In May of 2023, I was blindsided by a breast cancer diagnosis. I have spent my whole life striving for health and wellness yet didn't escape breast cancer's unbiased selection. At that point I was working on getting my first muscle up, starting to handstand walk, and crushing cardio workouts. Over the next year of surgeries, radiation treatment, physical therapy, and adjusting to long-term meds, my whole perspective on exercise and CrossFit was flipped upside down. Instead of being limited by my effort, time to practice skills, or discipline in nutrition, I now was faced with actual physical limitations that forced me to adjust my approach mentally and physically. I may not be working on a muscle up (yet), but rather working on actually showing up and mentally fighting through frustration and doubt. My mindset goal is now "You vs. You."
CrossFit was the first athletic environment for me (outside of collegiate sports) where the goal is to get stronger, master skills, and beat your personal bests. The switch in mindset from burning calories and being skinny to how much I can clean and how many pull-ups I can string together, renewed my love for fitness and provided a much healthier relationship with exercise and nutrition. I love sharing this mindset through coaching. It is so rewarding to encourage athletes to push themselves beyond what they think they are capable of and watch them beat themselves in their "You vs. You" journey.
